Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a Carnival barker as a young girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. She only attended school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting career. Her path to success turned out be strewn with obstacles: In New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. Following a short period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return home and quit her job. She was an usherette in the mornings and appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. She also studied drama and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
